Everything about timing belts

Here you will find all the information you need for your timing belts

Welded PU timing belts

Basic information about the timing belt

called synchronous belts or timing belts in engine technology ) are mechanical drive elements that transmit forces positively by engaging in timing belt pulleys of the same profile.

They offer precise power transmission without slippage and are available in various materials and profiles. The positive locking of the teeth allows for the transmission of high forces with lower preload.

Timing belts combine the properties of a chain and a flat belt.

What should be considered regarding the size of timing belts?

The size of a timing belt is determined by 4 specifications:

1. Profile (split teeth and tooth shape)

A timing belt profile always clearly defines the pitch and shape . Even with the same pitch, the tooth shape can differ. It is important that the timing belt and pulley have the same profile to ensure optimal power transmission. Examples of pitches are:

T profile (T5, T10, T20), AT profile (AT5, AT10, AT20), HTD profile (3m, 5m, 8m, 14m) Imperial profile (H, L, XL)

The tooth shape varies depending on the profile. T profiles have a trapezoidal shape, while teeth in the HTD profile are semicircular.

2. Width of the timing belt

achieve the desired width cutting ).

This process is possible with both neoprene and PU timing belts, increasing their flexibility for various applications.

Timing belts are available in various widths and lengths and are adapted accordingly based on the individual requirements of the application.

3. Number of teeth and length

The total length of a timing belt can be calculated based on the number of its teeth and the so-called pitch. The pitch refers to the distance from the center of one tooth to the center of the next along the belt. The formula for the calculation is:

Number of teeth x pitch = belt length

This length always refers to the entire circumference of the timing belt, since the belt runs as a closed circle.

4. Material of the belt and the tension members

Timing belts are made of neoprene or polyurethane (PU).

Neoprene timing belts offer a wide temperature range, run quietly, and are more economical than polyurethane (PU) belts. Depending on the application, tensile members Steel tensile members offer high tensile strength and stiffness but are susceptible to corrosion. Kevlar tensile members excel in impact resistance and flexibility but tend to swell in humid conditions and have lower flexural fatigue strength.

What advantages do timing belts have over V-belts?

Timing belts essentially have 3 advantages

rubber timing belt

Precise power transmission

Timing belts transmit forces positively , enabling precise and slip-free power transmission .

Furthermore, wear and tear and stress on other components are also minimized.

Timing belts thus offer a reliable solution for high-precision applications where slippage and deviations in the movement sequence must be avoided.

Lower preload

Due to the positive locking of the teeth, toothed belts transmit high forces with significantly lower pretension , which reduces the load on bearings and drive components.

This extends the service life of the entire system, as the lower preload reduces wear and ensures gentle power transmission.

Timing belts sold by the meter

Timing belts are available not only as endless belts but also as rolls , which allows for a high degree of flexibility in adapting to specific applications.

This belt material, sold by the meter, allows timing belts to be cut to exact lengths to perfectly match specific requirements. This is particularly advantageous for custom-made belts where individual lengths and specifications are needed.

The ability to adapt belts to the specific needs of machines or systems increases the efficiency of the overall application.

What is polyamide fabric?

Polyamide fabric is used to minimize friction and noise

PU timing belt with PAZ

PAZ (polyamide fabric on the tooth side)

PAZ is recommended for applications where the toothed side rests on a surface .

This special design is particularly advantageous for zero-gap timing belt pulleys, as it offers an optimal fit. The use of polyamide fabric reduces friction between the belt and the pulley , as well as minimizing noise during operation .

These features not only contribute to improved efficiency of the drive system, but also ensure quiet operation.

PAR (polyamide fabric on the back of the strap)

PAR is ideal for applications where the belt back rests on a surface .

Similar to PAZ, the polyamide fabric reduces friction between the belt and the contact surface . This reduction in friction not only leads to more efficient power transmission but also minimizes noise during operation.

This quieter and smoother operation, which is crucial in many industrial applications.

PAZ/PAR (Polyamide fabric on tooth side and belt back)

This combination is ideal for applications where both the toothed side and the back of the belt rest on a surface .

The double coating with polyamide fabric maximizes the reduction of friction and noise . This design not only improves the efficiency of power transmission but also ensures quiet operation.

What types of manufacturing are there?

Generally, a distinction is made between open and closed

Rubber timing belts

Closed manufactured

Timing belt windings are manufactured in a closed format.

The spirally wound tension cords ensure continuous force absorption and high stability . The final dimensions of the belts are fixed in length, but the width can be individually adjusted for each customer.

Material options:

- Neopren

- Polyurethane (PU)

Open PU timing belt

Open-manufactured (timing belts sold by the meter)

Meterware timing belts are available as rolls with a maximum length of 100 m (longer lengths available on request) and a width between 50 and 300 mm.

Since cutting them to specific widths is expensive, they are often offered in common dimensions for standard timing belt pulleys.

Material options for open timing belts:

  • Polyurethane (PU)

Open-cut (welded lengths of material)

Timing belts sold by the meter can also be cut to almost any length by welding, taking the belt pitch into account (e.g., in 10 mm increments for a 10 mm pitch belt). However, this method reduces the tensile strength to about 50% compared to belts manufactured in a single piece, which is why welded belts are primarily used in longer formats and for conveying applications.

Timing belt profiles and dimensions

Timing belt profiles and dimensions

The profile of a timing belt describes the tooth spacing and tooth shape.

It is standardized according to DIN ISO 5294 and for timing belt pulleys according to DIN ISO 5296 and plays a central role in defining the belt height and the tensile cord thickness.

Profiles are offered in metric (e.g., T5, M-profiles) and imperial versions. Imperial profiles, which were the first to be developed, are specified in inches, although our shop also indicates the metric length to avoid confusion.
