Multi-ribbed belts (also known as poly-V belts) are endless, friction-fit drive belts with multiple parallel longitudinal ribs. They combine the advantages of flat and V-belts: On the underside, trapezoidal rubber ribs act as frictional links against correspondingly shaped pulleys. Typically, the closed belt blank is vulcanized from an elastomer rubber compound (e.g., neoprene/NR-SBR or EPDM), with a low-stretch polyester tensile cord incorporated into the belt body. This creates a homogeneous belt structure in which the top and bottom rubber layers, as well as the backing layer, are firmly bonded together. The numerous narrow ribs allow power to be transmitted over a large contact area, enabling space-saving, smooth-running drives with high power density.
The PL profile conforms to DIN 7868 and has the following characteristic dimensions: rib spacing (pitch) 4.70 mm. The belt width is calculated by multiplying the number of ribs by 4.70 mm. PL V-ribbed belts are manufactured in customer-specific widths – the number of ribs can be freely selected depending on the performance requirements (typically a few to several dozen ribs). The belt material is an abrasion-resistant rubber (often neoprene/SBR or EPDM) that offers good wear resistance and elasticity. The embedded tensile cord consists of high-quality polyester fabric with very low elongation. This material combination gives the belt high tensile strength and a long service life.
Operating conditions typically range from approximately -30 °C to +80 °C, with standard compounds maintaining their mechanical properties within this temperature range. Higher temperatures accelerate the aging of the rubber compound. Like other V-belts, PL ribbed belts have limited oil resistance, so contact with strong mineral oils should be avoided. A conductive layer is often applied to the rubber backing to dissipate static charge.
The belt's performance is primarily determined by the number of ribs and the material used. The low-elongation reinforcement ensures minimal changes in length under load, while the parallel ribs provide a large contact area – both contributing to high efficiency and smooth running. Special compounds and aramid-reinforced belts are also available for specific requirements (e.g., very high temperatures or oil-resistant versions).
PL V-ribbed belts are generally low-maintenance, but should be installed and cared for correctly. Before installation, ensure that the pulleys are clean, free of burrs, and properly aligned. Place the belt loosely into the appropriate grooves without twisting it; the tension can usually be adjusted by moving the driven shaft or using tensioning devices. Overtensioning should be avoided, as this can shorten the belt's lifespan. After installation, it is recommended to check the tension again after a break-in period.
During operation, contaminants such as abrasion particles or oil deposits should be regularly removed from the belt. Caution is advised with oils and greases: due to their limited oil resistance, contact with oily substances can attack and embrittle the rubber. Defective belts (e.g., with cracks in the ribs or torn rubber) should be replaced immediately, as all belts in a set should always be replaced together in multi-belt applications. With proper installation and maintenance, PK V-ribbed belts offer a long service life and reliable operation
