General product description

Multi-ribbed belts (also known as poly-V belts) are endless, friction-fit drive belts with multiple parallel longitudinal ribs. They combine the advantages of flat and V-belts: On the underside, trapezoidal rubber ribs act as a frictional link against correspondingly shaped pulleys. The PJ profile is a metric design according to DIN 7868 and is characterized by a very low belt height. With a rib spacing of only 2.34 mm per rib (corresponding to a width of 2.34 mm), a PJ ribbed belt is particularly narrow and flexible. This slim design allows for use on very small pulley diameters. Typically, the closed belt blank is vulcanized from an elastomer rubber compound (e.g., neoprene/NR-SBR or EPDM), with a low-stretch polyester tensile cord incorporated into the belt body. This creates a homogeneous belt structure in which the top and bottom rubber layers, as well as the backing layer, are firmly bonded together. The many narrow ribs allow the force to be transmitted over a large contact area, enabling space-saving, smoothly running drives with high power density.

Technical specifications

The PJ profile conforms to DIN 7868 and has the following characteristic dimensions: rib spacing (pitch) 2.34 mm and belt height approximately 3.3–3.5 mm. The belt width is calculated by multiplying the number of ribs by 2.34 mm. PJ V-ribbed belts are manufactured in customer-specific widths – the number of ribs can be freely selected depending on the performance requirements (typically a few to several dozen ribs). The material used is an abrasion-resistant rubber (often neoprene/SBR or EPDM) that offers good wear resistance and elasticity. The embedded tension member consists of high-quality polyester fabric with very low elongation. This material combination gives the belt high tensile strength and a long service life.

Operating conditions typically range from approximately -30 °C to +80 °C, with standard compounds retaining their mechanical properties within this temperature range. Higher temperatures accelerate the aging of the rubber compound. Like other V-belts, PJ ribbed belts have limited oil resistance, so contact with strong mineral oils should be avoided. A conductive layer is often applied to the rubber backing to dissipate static electricity.

The belt's performance is primarily determined by the number of ribs and the material used. The low-elongation reinforcement ensures minimal changes in length under load, while the parallel ribs provide a large contact area – both contributing to high efficiency and smooth running. Special compounds and aramid-reinforced belts are also available for specific requirements (e.g., very high temperatures or oil-resistant versions).

Typical areas of application

PJ V-ribbed belts are primarily used in compact drive systems where high power output is required in a small installation space. Typical applications include general mechanical and plant engineering (e.g., printing presses, office machines, machine tools) as well as precision engineering. PJ belts are also frequently found in household and consumer appliances, such as washing machines, dryers, power tools, and kitchen appliances.

Furthermore, they are used in automation and conveyor technology. In material handling and roller conveyor systems, they enable compact, low-maintenance drives (including on curved belts). Other areas of application include printing and copying technology, office equipment, and sports and fitness equipment. Overall, PJ profiles are suitable wherever fast gear ratios or numerous idle deflections (e.g., serpentine drives) are required – for example, in test benches, conveyor belts, or automated packaging systems.

Advantages of the PJ profile compared to other profiles

The PJ profile offers several industry-specific advantages: Its narrow rib geometry (2.34 mm width) and flat design allow for very small pulley diameters and space-saving drives. Multiple parallel ribs distribute the drive torque over a large contact area, improving power transmission and minimizing slippage. As a result, PJ belts enable high transmission ratios, while their high flexibility allows them to be routed even around tight radii.

Furthermore, PJ multi-ribbed belts are characterized by quiet, low-vibration operation. The soft rubber ribs and the large number of contacts ensure dampened vibrations and smooth operation – significantly quieter than, for example, conventional single V-belts. Compared to thicker profiles (such as PK or plate belts), PJ belts offer better flexibility and thus greater belt flexibility. This facilitates installation in multi-stage or double belt sets as well as use in cam and torsion drives. In general, thanks to their design, PJ belts enable very high efficiencies (well over 90%) and exceptionally smooth torque transmission.

Care and assembly instructions

PJ V-ribbed belts are generally low-maintenance, but should be installed and cared for correctly. Before installation, ensure that the pulleys are clean, free of burrs, and properly aligned. Place the belt loosely into the appropriate grooves without twisting it; the tension can usually be adjusted by moving the driven shaft or using tensioning devices. Overtensioning should be avoided, as this can shorten the belt's lifespan. After installation, it is recommended to check the tension again after a break-in period.

During operation, contaminants such as abrasion particles or oil deposits should be regularly removed from the belt. Caution is advised with oils and greases: due to their limited oil resistance, contact with oily substances can attack and embrittle the rubber. Defective belts (e.g., with cracks in the ribs or torn rubber) should be replaced immediately, as all belts in a set should always be replaced together in multi-belt applications. With proper installation and maintenance, PJ V-ribbed belts offer a long service life and reliable operation
